London Bus Design
Preparation for Case Study
1. Essential Preparation
The case study on Wednesday is based on the challenges of designing a bus for London. Please prepare for the case study by doing the following as a minimum.
1.1 Watch the 30 min programme “Perpetual Motion - The Routemaster Bus”
While watching the programme, make notes on the design features of the bus, what the stakeholders of the bus thought about it, and any design trade-offs or compromises.
The best option if you are a UCL student is to watch via BoxOfBroadcasts using this link.

If you cannot access this resource, then follow these links to “youtube” videos. These are in two parts and you will need to view both.

1.2 Read the 1994 article from The Independent “Swan Song for the Big Red Bus”.
This can be found on the Moodle page or will be emailed to short course delegates.
1.3 Look at these web site pages to learn about the new Routemaster Bus

2. Additional optional preparation
2.1 Ride on the Buses:
The original Routemaster bus is still running a limited service on the number 15 bus route “Heritage Line”. The New Routemaster now runs on many routes around London.
2.2 Look at the original:
There are also many examples in the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden and the London Bus Museum at Brooklands, Weybridge.
2.3 Watch more videos about the new bus
search “New Routemaster” on Google.
